Are you, like me, too poor to buy designer clothes? Spinning Closet is our salvation!
Spinning Closet is an initiative from Ceyla Ruypers and Lilia Planyjan. It’s a new platform that specializes in rental designer fashion. Now everyone can wear designer without spending €1000 on an outfit!
But Spinning Closet is about more than just wearing fancy dresses. It’s about a circular wardrobe; using instead of owning. How often have you spent a lot of money on a dress for a party, that, after being worn once, ended up in the back of your closet, never to be worn again? Usually, those dresses are from fast fashion brands, which are not sustainable at all and are detrimental to the environment.
Even if you do spend money on a designer dress, you can’t show up at different events in the same season, wearing the same outfit. So that means buying several high-priced items that you only wear once.
Spinning Closet aims to change that! Why not just rent designer pieces for one night, spending only a fraction of the retail price?
They have an extensive collection for different occasions, ranging from wedding attire to business wear. Designers include Cavalli, Alexander McQueen, Diane von Furstenberg, Stella McCartney, Valentino, and many more!
Together with Borrow A Brand, Spinning Closet organized a fitting session and I was there! Together with some friends, I was invited to try out designer pieces in their lovely office in Amsterdam.
We were welcomed with a glass of champagne, and after a short introduction, the fun could begin! It’s hard not to feel like a diva when you’re trying on so many fancy items, while simultaneously sipping champagne!
I was looking for an outfit that would be appropriate for a work event on the Zuidas, meaning the dress had to be stylish, but not show too much skin. Ceyla and Lilia gave excellent advice and together, we picked an amazing Just Cavalli dress that was both lovely as well as suitable for the occasion.
I felt very pretty during my event! Having never worn designer before (because, really, who can afford to spend €500 on a dress?), I was VERY careful with it, proudly telling everyone it was Just Cavalli. All the compliments on my dress really made my evening and I felt sad having to return the dress.
I love the concept of renting instead of buying. Not only because you can literally spin your closet and always wear something different, but also because it’s so much better for our environment to stop buying so much clothes. As I explained in previous blogs, the fashion industry is one of the most polluting in the world. If we all rented a little more and bought a little less, us fashionistas could really make a difference!
Having said that, renting can still be a little pricey for some. The prices vary between €90 and €130 euros. It makes sense, as the retail prices of these dresses start around €500 and shipping and dry-cleaning costs are included in the rental price. But still, it is not an option for everyone.
I would however definitely rent again from SC when I have an event that calls for an upscale outfit!
As you can see below, I chose to combine the dress with boots instead of heels, giving it an edgy look as the event was more informal. What do you think? How would you combine it? I’d love to hear your opinion!
Special thanks to Megaidi from BaB for inviting me to the fitting session, and also to Ceyla and Lilia from SC for their advice and letting me wear one of their gorgeous dresses!
